Hyperlipidemia is an excess of lipids (fats, cholesterol and triglycerides) in your blood. Hyperlipidemia is the most common form of dyslipidemia.
Dyslipidemia is the medical term for an imbalance of cholesterol in the bloodstream, and is a major risk factor in developing cardiovascular disease.1 Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Canada, where it accounts for one third of all deaths.2
Types of Cholesterol
There are several types of cholesterol in your body – HDL is commonly called “good” cholesterol, and is vital to a person’s health.3 LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, can accumulate on the walls of arteries, increasing the risk of cardiovascular events like heart attacks (myocardial infarctions), angina (chest pain), and stroke.
A person’s lifestyle can affect their cholesterol levels – obesity, inactivity and poor diet increase the amount of harmful LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream,4 and smoking can lower beneficial HDL levels. There are certain diseases that cause an increased risk of hyperlipidemia, such as diabetes.
Treatment for Hyperlipidemia
Hyperlipidemia is usually chronic but controlled by statin medication. If untreated, those with hyperlipidemia are more likely to suffer atherosclerosis (a hardening of the arteries). This can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular events.

to enable a clinical research site in your area to contact you;
to confirm if your registration on ResearchTrials.org resulted in enrollment in any clinical trial, as well as the specific clinical trial(s) you enrolled in;

For Patients, the information you submit on ResearchTrials.org will be used for the above purposes. Because the clinical research sites are located in different countries, your personal information may be transmitted to your nearest research site (or research site you selected).
That research site may be in a different country than the location of the ResearchTrials.org database.
For Sponsors and Physicians, the information you submit on ResearchTrials.org will be used to contact you.
Personal Information will not be sold or rented and will not be exchanged with unaffiliated entities, except to fulfill the Purposes set out above, unless you are first notified and expressly consent to such transfer. Probity will seek to ensure that any third parties it shares your information with also comply with the terms of this Privacy Policy.
Probity is aware of your concern for privacy when using ResearchTrials.org. Probity takes reasonable steps to protect your Personal Information as you transmit your information from your computer to our websites and to protect your information from loss, misuse and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration or destruction. Patients, Physicians and Sponsors have a right of access to their own Personal Information in a record that is in the custody or under the control of Probity, subject to some exceptions set out in applicable legislation. For example, organizations are required under PIPEDA to refuse to provide access to information that would reveal Personal Information about another individual. Further, organizations are authorized under PIPEDA to refuse access to Personal Information if disclosure would reveal confidential business information. Access may also be refused if the information is privileged or the information was generated in the course of a formal dispute resolution process.
If access is refused, in whole or in part, Probity will provide the reasons for the refusal. In cases where exceptions to access apply, Probity may withhold that information but will provide you with the remainder of the record.

The ResearchTrials.org web server captures the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses of each connection to the website and the specific web pages visited during that connection. An IP address is a number assigned to your computer by your Internet Service Provider so you can access the Internet and is generally considered to be non-personally identifiable information because in most cases it changes each time you connect to the Internet.
